Kelston Sparkes crushing and screening division was set up just over 20 years ago and has quickly grown to become the largest operation of its kind in the South West and a major part of Kelston Sparkes Group quarrying services. Success can be attributed to great planning, good timing and significant on-going investment in the best products and technology on the market.
The division started life in the early 2000’s crushing and screening products to use in groundworks contracts. However, with extensive contracts for load and haul operations in a number of local quarries, Kelston Sparkes spotted the opportunity to offer an end-to-end solution, including contract crushing and screening. An added bonus for clients is that the company crushes and then buys back some of the crushed material for its own contracting business. This has proved to be a great mutual solution and several customers opted for the service, including Aggregate Industries, Hansons, Tarmac, and Breedons, to name a few.
To ensure maximum productivity for customers on site, as well as in-house processing operations, Kelston Sparkes has continued to invest heavily in the best crushers including impact, jaw and cone crushers and screening equipment from suppliers including Gipo, Metso, Finlay and McCloskey. The company’s location – just 10 miles from the largest limestone seam in the Mendip Hills – also means that it is in the perfect geographical area to supply top-grade limestone aggregates.
Today, Kelston Sparkes is crushing over 5 million tonnes of aggregate annually, varying from fill materials, to single size. The company is one of only a few that offers Recycled Asphalt Processing (RAP). RAP contains high quality materials that are similar to virgin asphalt. Recycling this material into new products reduces the requirement for expensive bitumen and is a particularly popular option for companies that are looking to improve their carbon footprint as well as their costs.
The team at Kelston Sparkes includes Quarrying Director, Phil Oddy, who is widely-known as one of the foremost specialists in the sector. He oversees one of the largest contracts of its kind in the UK at a super quarry located on East Mendip; Torr Works. Owned by Aggregate Industries Kelston Sparkes runs the load & haul contract for around 6.5 million tonnes of limestone a year including secondary crushing.
